Was it only yesterday, I kissed you goodnight
But that time is too soon gone,
For you are growing into manhood
The gift of being born...
I am grateful for your tender years
As I thank God for your love,
I had no idea on your birth day
How precious you'd become.
The special memories I recall
Your little head upon my arm,
All the fun, adventure
While protecting you from harm.
As I let go those yesterdays
The nights I paced the floor,
I will watch you walk your path
To find your open door.
As you grow into the joy
Of finding life can hold much more,
My encouragement I give
As you follow your own call.
For a father's love is not enough
There's courage needed on your way,
As you put your trust in God
My part will be to pray.
But the treasure I will keep forever
Is my delight in who your are,
And, as I will be your father always
You will be my shining star.
