She came to me as I sat alone
That girl I used to be
She looked at me with an earnest eye
As she questioned reproachfully:
Did you forget the many plans
The hopes I had for you?
The great career, the thoughts of fame
Many wonderful things to do?
Where is the mansion you dreamed of
With beautiful gardens so rare
The silks and satins I dreamed for you
The jewels in your soft hair?
And as she spoke, I became very sad
For I wanted her pleased with me
This slender girl from the memories past
The girl that I used to be.
So rising gently I took her hand
And guided her to a room
Where peacefully sleeping my children lay
By the light of God's beautiful moon.
And I told her that these are my only gems,
So precious they are to me
That silk and satin is motherhood
A costly simplicity.
The mansion so lovely is my gift of love
It is the only career I know
Serving each day in these sheltered walls
As my dear ones who come and go.
And as I spoke to my yesterday guest
She smiled through her tears at me
And I saw the woman that I am now
Pleased the girl I used to be.
