Aunt Emmas' Trinket Box
She kept on the shelf
Looked so very lonely
Sitting all by its' self
Sometimes I would
question her
And ask, 'what is inside'
Her answer was 'something special'
And often times she cried
Then one day her answer changed
'someday I'll let you see,
Until that time, don't you touch
It's very special to me'
Aunt Em never married
I questioned 'bout that too
She gave a similar answer
'Some day, I'll tell it all to you'
Then one day Em sent for me
Said she had something to tell
I knew it was about the trinket box
That she guarded so well
Very soon after I arrived
She said, 'Sit down
here with me'
And handed me the trinket box
Said, 'now open up and see'
I opened up that little box
And there was the surprise
Two little golden
hearts
Sparkling before my eyes
Before I said a word
Aunt Em began to speak
Then I saw the tears
Go trickling down her cheek
'I was visiting Ireland,
I was a maiden then
I met an Irish soldier
And fell in love with him'
'We made each other
promises
Before he went to war
I came home to wait for him
Then heard nothing more'
'He said we'd be together
before the robins sing'
We planned an Irish wedding
When he returned that spring
One night I was awakened
Just in time to see
An angel leave this trinket box
And two golden hearts for me
I believe there is a heaven
And love lasts eternally
Somehow he sent this trinket box
To say, there he waits for me
